Payment processing for nonprofits
Donations, events, and memberships all cost something to process. A statement review shows what your organization pays.
Why it's different here
What I look at for nonprofits
Every dollar a nonprofit pays in processing fees is a dollar that does not go to the mission. Organizations often take donations online, at events, and by recurring gifts, and each of those can be priced differently on the same statement.
I treat a nonprofit like any business I work with: I go through your statement line by line, show you your effective rate, and set up whatever you need to take payments, from an event terminal to online and recurring payments. If what you have is already fair, I will tell you.

Where nonprofits usually lose money
Online donation fees
Online and keyed payments price differently from in-person cards. Knowing how much of your giving is online changes what fair pricing looks like.
Recurring gifts that fail
A monthly donor whose card expires stops giving without meaning to. Recurring payments need to handle updated cards.
Event nights
Galas and fundraisers need terminals that work in a ballroom or a parking lot, and pricing that does not punish one big night a year.
Fees nobody reviewed
Volunteer-run finances often mean the processing account was set up once and never checked again.

Good to know
Questions owners ask me
Do nonprofits pay lower card processing fees?
Sometimes. Visa and Mastercard have lower rates for registered charities, but they are not automatic. The account has to be set up under the right category and the organization registered for the program.
Many nonprofits never get them simply because nobody asked. Your statement shows whether you are getting charity pricing now.
Can donors cover the processing fee?
Yes. Many donation forms include an optional box that lets the donor add a little to cover the fees. Because the donor chooses it, it is part of the gift, not a surcharge.
It works best when the wording is friendly and the box starts unchecked, so no one feels tricked.
Can donors give monthly by card or bank account?
Yes. Recurring gifts can run on a card or by ACH from a bank account. ACH usually costs less and doesn't expire the way cards do, while cards are easier for donors to set up.
For cards, ask about automatic card updates, which keep a monthly gift going when a donor's card is replaced.
Can we take donations at an event without Wi-Fi?
Yes. A wireless terminal that runs on cellular takes tap, chip and phone payments anywhere in the room. For smaller events, tap to pay on a phone can be enough.
Set it up and run a test donation before the doors open, so the first guest in line isn't the test.
